Why Most Websites Don't Convert

A website that looks good and gets traffic but doesn't book revenue is the most common problem we fix. The assumption is usually 'we need more traffic' — but when we actually look at the analytics, the traffic is fine. The site is converting 0.5% when it should be converting 3–5%. That's a tenfold difference in booked revenue from the same number of visitors. The gap is almost always explained by four specific conversion leaks, and none of them require more SEO or more ads to fix. They require the site to be re-engineered around the decision a real visitor is actually making.

The first leak is slow load time. Every second above two seconds costs roughly 7–15% of conversions depending on device and network. On a mid-range Android phone on LTE (the median McKinney visitor), most service business sites load in 4–6 seconds. Fix Core Web Vitals first — optimize images, defer non-critical JavaScript, use a real CDN — and watch the conversion rate climb before you touch anything else. The second leak is unclear above-the-fold messaging. If a visitor can't tell what you do, who it's for, and how to take the next step in under three seconds, they bounce. The fix is a single-sentence value proposition paired with a visible primary CTA — not a carousel of stock photos.

The third leak is missing trust signals. Service businesses lose booked revenue when the site doesn't make it obvious that real people have worked with you and had good outcomes. Add reviews with names and photos, real before/after work, recognizable client logos if you have them, and team photos. The fourth leak is friction in the funnel itself. Multi-step forms with 12 required fields kill conversions. Ask for the minimum you need to start a conversation — name, phone or email, and the service they're interested in. Everything else can come on the follow-up. Similarly, a phone number that rings to voicemail after 5pm is the same as no phone number at all for service businesses where buying decisions happen after work.
